JENNIFER O'NEIL PINK

What a weekend it was! On Saturday, I went to the Women's Conference at Temple Baptist Church to hear Jennifer O'Neil speak. It was a wonderful conference. There were over 250 women there but there should have been so much more. Jennifer has a powerful witness and I would encourage everyone to take a look at her website. She has gone through so many things in her life and has risen above it all with the help of Jesus Christ. Praise His name! I met some very nice and interesting women. Lunch was provided by Chik Filet and it was greatly appreciated. They had some very good sponsors. Donna Clingingpeel invited me as her guest. She is such a wonderful Christian woman.

Saturday night, I fulfilled my duties as usher at church and welcomed people to "The Easter Song." It was a absolutely awesome experience. Everyone involved with the drama worked so hard. Reverend Dennis Adams was the Music Director and his wife Lynn Adams was the Drama Director. They had a lot of help and they said later that everyone was so cooperative and did everything they were asked. The Spirit was working with them, because it was evident in the performance on Saturday and Sunday night. By calculations, over 750 people witnessed this extraordinary event over the two evenings. (This figure does not include those who participated in the drama.)

Sunday morning was a moving experience. Everyone was so sweet and I received enough hugs to last me a while. Ray and Juanita Wilson were there and I got a big hug from Ray. We are praying for each other. Ray has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. Please add him to your prayer list. He and Juanita are such faithful Christians. I love them both so much. They have been awesome Prayer Warriors.

I saw a program the other night by Way of the Master ministries on witnessing to Mormons. It was a great show. Ray Comfort really has a way of putting everything on the line. The following is a quote from the Way of the Master Website.
  • Most of this world knows that Jesus gave His life on the cross as a sacrifice, but they don't understand why. It was a legal transaction.

  • We have violated God's Law through lying, stealing, blasphemy, lust, adultery, hatred, fornication, selfishness, etc.

  • That Law shows that we are guilty criminals standing before the Judge of the Universe. We are heading for God's prison--a terrible place called "Hell."

  • The gospel tells us that Jesus paid our fine through His sacrifice on the cross. That means because of the suffering death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, God can legally dismiss our case.

  • He can commute our death sentence and let us live upon our repentance and faith in Jesus, because our "fine" was paid 2,000 years ago.

  • This is how the Bible puts it: "But God shows and clearly proves His [own] love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for us" (Romans 5:8, Amplified Bible).

GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME!

Oh, by the way, if you call me and I don't answer right away, it usually means I don't recognize the number. We answer for the Lions Club. At least Ray does and it is usually someone needing glasses, so I don't answer unless I know the number that is calling. If you let it ring, the answering machine will pick up and if I am home, I will pick up. Don't be afraid to call. I am not really a nap person, although I have been known to fall asleep sitting up at the computer.

Love to all, Barbara

FLAMING PINK!

Thursday morning as we were leaving the Riverside Cancer Center, we saw a car smoking. Ray immediately called 911. Then fire fell out the bottom of the car and the whole front went up in flames. We waited until the fire truck got there and put it out. It turns out that it belonged to one of the ladies who is having treatment just after me. She came in as I was leaving yesterday, so it happened just after she got there. She was so fortunate not to be in the car. Although I found out this morning that it was her only car, and her husband has an old truck. She drove a rental provided by the insurance company, but her car was totaled. Her hospital bills have been astronomical and they won't be able to get another car right away. I wish there was something I could do. I can pray for her and I ask that you all pray also.

My hip is really hurting this morning, even with pain pills. Ray drives me to radiation each morning and I can't tell you how much I appreciate all he does for me. He says that we are in this together. He is truly a man after God's own heart.

Beverly came yesterday and she worked on Ray's old computer and I worked on my laptop. We got some more work done on the website. It is looking good. I did some creative things converting things to picture files to upload them to the site. But when they loaded, all there was is a little X. Bev said that the ForMinistry people said they were having a problem with picture uploading, so I will try again today.

Juanita Wilson sent me this today. Keep her and Ray in your prayers.
Concentrate on this Sentence: 'To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.' When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. Concentrate on this sentence... 'The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.' Something good will happen to you today; something that you have been waiting to hear.

Have you Tweeted yet? That is what they call it when you use Twitter. It is a little dry but I have some nice people following me: Tom Ziglar (Zig Ziglar's son), Joyce Meyer, Marcus Pitman, etc.

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Mark Twain (1835-1910)

Take care and have a great day. As Donna says: "I am going out and get some sun today and talk to the Son!"
Love to all,

WEB PINK

We went to the Cancer Center this morning. It was the first time I have had to wait for the radiation and then I had to wait for the doctor. I found out that they were down one doctor and one nurse. They are all so nice. One lady is in her final week and had a boost last Thursday. It burned her skin. She said that was the first time that happened.

Beverly got here just after I got home and we had a productive morning. We got some good things done and the Music Website is coming right along.

The church is having lots of rehearsals for the Easter Musical on March 28 & 29. As the Music Website Co-Director I hope we have a very large choir for the Musical so we can have a beautiful picture for our Web Site.

We need to support our church even more now while we are doing the search for a new pastor. This is the time that we should celebrate our true Pastor, The Lord Jesus Christ. He will be watching and listening to this wonderful musical worship experience. We can be there to support our choir and show our love for the Lord. I think it is something that no member should miss. I hope to see you all there.

I called Temple Baptist Church to speak to Donna Clingingpeel. Just after I left a message she was on FaceBook and I told her I wanted to come to the Women's Conference there on Saturday. She invited me to come as her guest. Isn't that sweet? She is such a good person and she works so hard for her church and for her Lord. I really love her spirit. Thank you, Lord, for giving me such a dear friend.

I was a little tired today and actually took a nap. I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!

Lord, take care of those women I meet at the Cancer Center each morning and protect them and their families. Lord, if they don't know you, let them open their hearts and minds to your glory. Amen

TWITTER PINK

I am now on Twitter! I found some people that were not on Facebook there to keep up with. I put a quote on there this morning by Zig Ziglar and Tom Ziglar asked this afternoon if he could follow me. Isn't that something? I love this networking and meeting new people. It is amazing what people are doing. Marcus Pittman is preaching on the boardwalk in VA Beach, Lynn Adams is creating Jerusalem at First Baptist, Donna Clingingpeel has been redoing the children's ministry at Temple Baptist. I found my sister Linda on Twitter, but her user name is almost Choctaw Indian language. My nephew Jeremy is there but not on Facebook. Try Twitter.

I did the neatest thing today. I am still not sure how I did it, but all the pictures that I have put on the blog, on facebook, and on Google meshed into albums. It surveyed them, picked out the faces and let me name the people. It was the coolest thing. I am getting good at this. My Adsense is hooked up now to actually work. It is amazing what Google can do. I have email there at barbara.p.duke@gmail.com .

My leg was hurting all last night so I didn't make it to church this morning. I just didn't get enough sleep. I dozed while Ray was gone this morning and put together lunch. Ray was in front of the TV all afternoon, dozing. I was in the bedroom watching Lifetime movies. I was able to go online and read email and do some research on chemotherapy. I really am not looking forward to it. My sister, Jan, called yesterday and told me that when I am going through chemo, I need to drink lots of water. That won't be easy. I have a hard time drinking a lot of liquid.

I talked to Mother yesterday too. She is all set for her surgery, Cindy is coming from Texas next Saturday and Mother has Surgery on the 30th. She plans to stay a week. I sure wish I could go be there with them. I haven't seen Cindy in about 4 years, I think. Our family is so spread out. Cindy and Linda are near Dallas, Jan is in Florida, Sonny is in Kentucky, and I am here. At least none of us are way out west. LOL!

I asked the nurse last week and there is no precautions about staying out of the sun anymore. I can go out and work in the yard with a hat. They just don't want me lay out and bake. That is good news. So, I am going to get an appointment with a cardiovascular doctor this week and see if there is something they can do about this phlebitis. There is just so much sitting around with your leg up a body can be expected to do.

I haven't heard from Kathryn lately. She showed me a little of her wedding plans, but hasn't shared anything lately. She was looking for a job. I hope she found one that pays well and she likes it. She is so special.

I missed church today. John Patterson said that Tag (pastor) said things just weren't the same without me there. I hope he didn't say that during the service. Beverly is coming in the morning to work on the website. We both hated missing the Bible study on Wednesday night.

Today's Word from Joel and Victoria Osteen

Did you know that your life will always go in the direction of your most prominent thoughts? In order to follow God's plan, you have to think God's thoughts for your life, which will encourage and build you up.

Do you feel like you are walking through a tough place in your life today?
When you walk through the "valley of weeping," God is walking with you.
He wants to strengthen and empower you to keep moving forward.

He is leading you to a place of blessing and refreshing! Be encouraged today, it's not over until God says it's over, and He always causes us to triumph!
The Bible says that weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning!

It also says that the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn shining brighter until the full day.
No matter how dark your circumstance may seem, you are on a path that is shining brighter and brighter.
Know today that there is a place of victory on the other side of your challenge.

Keep believing and keep expecting.
As you continue to meditate on the goodness of God and declare His favor in your life, you will be strengthened and refreshed in your inner man.
You will rise higher and higher, and you will live the life of victory the Lord has in store for you!

Father in Heaven, thank You for leading me to my place of blessing. I trust that You are faithful and believe that You have a good plan for my life. Help me to always hear Your voice so I can follow You all the days of my life. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

ATTITUDE SUPERCEDES APTITUDE PINK!

I got a phone call and radiation was canceled for today! Although I was ready, my hip and leg was already giving me fits without going out in the damp weather. I have been fighting it all day. I actually did some laundry, cleaned the kitchen, the living room, and my bedroom. I did a little, sat a little all day. By this evening, I am so tired. I tried laying down, but my hip hurts. Ray felt sorry for me and went and got some DiGorno Pizza for supper. It sure was good.

I got a call from the lady at the Woman's Club that is in charge of the Art Show. My art won a blue ribbon at the Club Level and the District Level. She asked if I wanted it to go to the State Level. Sure, why not? Send it on up. It is not the best one I have done like it. The best one is in Florida with my sister Jan. It was the first one like that. It is really different. I will have to put it on the blog when it comes back.

Ray is in hog-heaven. BASKETBALL! I may go to bed early. Not my cup of tea. I was a pretty good player in gym class but never wanted to be on a team. They didn't have girls teams then. So I never really got interested in sports. I think it is wonderful that young girls can really participate in sports now if they want to. Not that I ever wanted to.

I got a note from Betty Lucido that my Mary Kay account was expiring. So I went on line and placed an order. If you know someone who is interested in Mary Kay products, give them my name please. My daughter, Rhonda, signed up under me and some months, her Mary Kay earnings have bought the groceries for the 4 of them. It is a nice supplemental income and she enjoys it. I have always admired Mary Kay. She was a wonderful woman who helped a lot of women achieve their dreams. Mary Kay pays better than almost any other home marketing business. It has helped to put a lot of women in better situations than they would have been otherwise. I haven't done much with Mary Kay because I had a full-time job. I took a 3 month break after I retired and then I found the lump in my breast in January. So, I would like to start supplementing my retirement if you know anyone who is interested. Thanks!

I started another blog: http://AttitudeSupercedesAptitude.blogspot.com/. I really wanted to do something positive that might inspire someone. I hope you enjoy. I only have a couple of things on it just now.

Mary Lynch, Chairman of the Deacons at FBC, called this afternoon. She was checking up on my progress. She is such a wonderful prayer warrior. She said her sister told her after she was cured from breast cancer, that it brought her closer to God and that she wouldn't give up the time she spent with God during her illness even if it meant having cancer again.

TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT - http://www.heartlight.org/ March 20, 2009

VERSE: "Who has stirred up this king from the east, who meets victory at every step? Who, indeed, but the LORD? He gives him victory over many nations and permits him to trample their kings underfoot. He puts entire armies to the sword. He scatters them in the wind with his bow. He chases them away and goes on safely, though he is walking over unfamiliar ground. Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD - with the first of them and with the last-I am he." -- Isaiah 41:4

THOUGHT: God is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. This is great comfort for us. We don't have to choose another deity in the course of our lives. We don't have to worry about our Father's leaving us as prey for other gods. We don't have to worry about his Word becoming obsolete or outdated. He will be with us always.

PRAYER: Eternal Father, God of mercy and grace, thank you for your faithfulness. You were faithful to your promises to Israel. You were faithful in your promises to send a Messiah. You are faithful to lead and guide me by your Spirit. You will faithfully bring me into your presence at the return of the Lord Jesus. Thank you for being my stable Rock and Refuge in times that are so unstable, transient, and fickle. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Good Night!

RADIATION PINK - 4

I just got home from my 4th treatment. I saw the nutritionist today. She is a very nice lady. I heard some disturbing news today. Dr. McKenna has left the practice and is no longer in the area. He had cancer before, I hope he hasn't had a recurrence. I really liked him, I hope he is well wherever he is.

Dinner at church was great last night. Roast Beef, Baked Potato, Green Beans, Roll, Salad, and chocolate pudding. There was a great class taught by Randy McCullum, but Beverly and I missed it because we were working on the Music Website. It is looking great.

I have been reading a lot. I really like positive thinking kind of books. Success Magazine is really good. Life is so much easier if you can lead it with a positive attitude. So, I read anything I can that makes me feel better. Actually, the best book and the book that most of the successful, positive books are based on is the Bible. Can any other religion claim that about their book of choice? The Bible is the ultimate positive thinking book. Just think about it: I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me!" That is really positive.

TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT - http://www.heartlight.org/ March 19, 2009
VERSE: The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lackof judgment. -Proverbs 10:21

THOUGHT: Righteous people have a way of blessing others with their words. It may be their word of encouragement, their carefully chosen speech, their advice full of wisdom, their message of comfort, their truth in teaching, or their faithfulness to their promises. No matter what form, the words of righteous people are a blessing. But fools don't listen to the righteous. They plot their own course refusing truth, wisdom, and godliness only to find their lives lost to meaninglessness and folly.

PRAYER: Father God, Author of all truth and wisdom, please give me the ability to discern those around me who are truly righteous and the wisdom to listen to what they say. Please help me avoid the pitfalls of pride and arrogance as I humbly seek to hear your truth in those whose lives are conformed to your character. In Jesus'name I pray. Amen.

I am learning some names at radiation, nurses and patients. There is Pat, Linda, Vivian so far.
Nurses need our prayers also. It has to be a tough job dealing with so many sick people.
It is going to be a beautiful day. Get out and enjoy it. I plan to. Love to all, Barbara

RADIATION PINK -3

Everything went well this morning. In and out in no time. I left my devotional book, but that is okay, someone may need it today. I don't think I really feel any different and Ray says I don't glow in the dark yet. I have been doing around the house today a little. I sure would love to get outside, but I am not supposed to be in the sun during treatment if possible.

Rhonda called last night. There is a dilema at her church, their pastor is retiring in a couple of months. She had a dream that she went to church and they brought in the new pastor and it was Ray. I told her he could probably do it, but he is not ordained as a minister, but as a deacon. I wouldn't mind. He studies his lessons each week so much so he can teach anytime he is called upon. He knows his Bible as good as anyone I have ever met. I told Ray what Rhonda said and he said that was funny. He sang at Rhonda's church on Sunday and before the service an elderly lady asked if he was going to be the new preacher. I have thought of it before, but pushed it to the back of my mind. But, you know how God talks to me sometime!

I met some ladies who were getting radiation this morning. I keep smiling until they do. Either some or depressed or they just are not morning people. I have to keep smiling, not just for me, but for them too.

Wednesday night dinner at church. Since we were not here Sunday, we don't know what is on the menu. I am sure it will be good. Wednesday night dinners are such a wonderful time of fellowship. We learned a lot about our country politics last week from Peggy White. She is teaching us about the early Baptists and the influence that they had in creating the government of this wonderful country.
I forgot about it until just now, but one of our XanGo distributors, Mac McCoy passed away. He had MS for a number of years and XanGo seemed to be the only thing that gave him relief and comfort in the past year or so. He was even able to walk and go up the stairs again. His wife Ann is so sweet. She called me when she heard I was ill. I will send her a card this afternoon.
It is nap time. I feel really tired all of a sudden. GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME!!!!!

RADIATION PINK - 2

We had Lions' Club Board Meeting at the Gregory's home. Linda outdid herself. Her snacks were wonderful. Linda & Jim are really hard working Lions. Earl Arrowood is donating a lot of stuff he got from a trailer that he repossessed. The people left the state and left a lot of things in the trailer that are in great shape. Some things are in the original boxes. We are going to have a huge Lions Yardsale on April 4th at the Stoneybrooke clubhouse. It has been closed for years and the person who owns it let us keep our stuff there. We decided last night that what we don't sell, we can donate to the Relay for Life yardsale in May.

Today was the second Radiation treatment. I went in at 7:46 a.m. I took some pain medication this morning so lying there didn't hurt. My leg is catchy, but feels better. I guess I will have to relent and take the medication so I can get around all day. I still didn't feel anything during the treatment and it was over before I knew it. They gave me a Green Coffee Mug for St. Patrick's Day. How nice. I gave the receptionist one of my little fish pins. I may have to order some more to give out.

I can't seem to keep awake. I keep dozing off. I guess I should lay down for a bit.

Leaning Toward the Light
Suggested Bible Reading:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
-John 1:1-5 (NRSV)

Today's ScriptureThe light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
-John 1:5 (NRSV)

WHEN my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, our initial conversation turned toward the gloom of illness and death. There were tears, fears, and struggles as she grappled with the possibilities that lay before her.

But then a light flickered. As she turned her attention toward healing, a light began to grow in the darkness. It grew brighter as people expressed support and prayed for her. This gave us hope. Some people provided books and other information that helped her move from darkness to light. Her faith in God gave her the assurance that cancer would not have the final word. God's healing would be her light in the darkness.

As she recovered over the Advent/Christmas season at home, our family grew closer in love. That holy season took on new meaning. God's love was abundant - everywhere evident in the lights, sounds, and aromas of the season.

As John proclaimed centuries ago, the darkness cannot overcome the light. The light of God is love - a fire, an illumination, a dance - that enables us to trust in our Creator's grace. This light also transforms our dark places into lustrous examples of the power of God.
Todd Outcalt (Indiana, USA)

Prayer
God of light, help us to give to you our hard times and our fears. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

The light of God transforms our darkness.

RADIATION PINK - 1

We are home, Thank You, Lord. The rain came down steadily all the 3 1/2 hour trip from our house in NC. I tried my computer some but my leg hurt so bad I had to put it away and lean the seat back. I took a pain pill and a nap.

Saturday afternoon, Jesse and Rhonda left the children with us and went and bought them a Golden Labrador Retriever. Tentatively, his name is Max. They were looking up other names but seem to like Max best. He is 9 weeks old and so cute. They are tickled. When I spoke to Jesse last night, he said the twins are cleaning up after Max. He is in the garage for now, due to the rain.

I went to bed about 12:30 and woke up at 3:30. I may need a nap today. I just couldn't go back to sleep. I guess it is the thought of gettin radiated today.

There are actually times when you are facing personal disasters that you think:

"What did I do to deserve this?"
Is there something that I did or could have done to avoid this awful pain/sickness? I don't think illness comes from something I did, because I have asked forgiveness for my sins, so God would not punish me for forgiven sins.

Just checking email this morning, look what I found on Today's Christian Woman:

For examples of godly repentance, read Psalm 51 or the prayer of confession from The Book of Common Prayer:

Most merciful God,
  • We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

  • We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

  • We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

  • For the sake of you Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” (Acts 3:19)

The Lenten season is the perfect time to rethink our foundational Christian realities, and to get on our knees before our Heavenly Father, name our sins, and let the healing work of our merciful Savior cleanse and restore and make new. I know I am in God's hands and He will restore me.

Here is another picture of my son, Jeff, on the left, then Taylor and Garrett writing/coloring on the paint wall. They are allowed to write, draw, paint, etc., on the wall. It keeps them very occupied sometimes.

Guess I better get going. I have time to actually do something before I go get my treatment today. I hope if you are reading this, that you have a wonderful day. Remember, Rain is liquid Sunshine. GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME!

COMING HOME PINK!

We are on the way home, near Ahoskie just now. Ray had to stay long enough to see Duke win, and they did. I have had some problems with my signal this weekend. I think because it has been raining and the signal just couldn't get enough juice to pick up. So, I am on line now. I will have to save a lot so I don't loose what I type.

We got to Greenville Friday evening and we went to the Mayflower Seafood House. How good was that? It was wonderful. We celebrated Ray's birthday and they gave us key-lime pie to take home. We ate it last night; so good! We then took the children home with us and they stayed a while before Rhonda and Jesse came to pick them up.

NORTH CAROLINA PINK

My grandchildren are almost 7 years old and I don't know if I should say anything to them about my health or not. Their Daddy's mother is very ill with cancer and is down to 75 lbs. I know that sounds awful low but I don't think she has ever weighed over 100 lbs in her life (except maybe when she was pregnant). Garrett and Taylor lost their Great-Uncle Clifton last year and it made them so sad. I have this thing about being honest with children so that when something bad happens, they are prepared. Not that anything bad is going to happen to me. I just think sometimes we protect children from the normal crisis of life a little too much. Just my opinion.

We are on our way to North Carolina. Actually, we are at Bojangles trying to get a hot fish sandwich. Ray came out to the car with 2 sandwiches and the cheese wasn't even melted and the bun was cold, like it had been frozen. Probably the last Bojangles fish sandwich we get. Burger King has a really good one, plus they have onion rings. Not to hungry just now. We are going to the Mayflower Seafood Restaurant when we get to Greenville. Rhonda, Jesse, Garrett, and Taylor are meeting us. It will be fun. The food there is great!

I tell you I feel much better since I made the decision to have the chemo. It is like a weight has been lifted. I just spoke to Linda and she is going to fill in for me Sunday as deacon. I have ushers, so we are traveling. I started another blog about motivation and attitude. I will let everyone know when I get some good stuff going on there.

We made it all the way, met family, went to dinner, Sam's Club, and the children came home with us for a while. They helped bring in our stuff. Rhonda came in and vacuumed. The mices have been out. Ray will go get traps tomorrow. We haven't figured out how they get it, but they do. They don't seem to come in when we are here, but they do when no one is here for a while. Normally, they are in the bathrooms, but today there was evidence in the kitchen. We leave everything packed away jars, tins, or in the refridgerator, so they couldn't have found much to eat.

I just love having the Verizon VZ access so I can use my computer and go on the net from here. The cell phone barely works, but the net does. LOL!

Time to call it a day. Just remember, no matter how good or bad things are in your life - GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME!

ACS DECISION PINK!

Beverly came over and we had fun working on the Church Website. We are almost at the point where we can link it to the church. It is getting exciting. The tedious part is reducing the pictures. I am going to make some collages in powerpoint. I know how to bring them together and make them 1 picture.

I went back on the ACS Breast Cancer Treatment Decision Tool website (https://www.cancer.nexcura.com/Secure/InterfaceSecure.asp?CB=266) that I have been filling out a cancer survey. Now that I have all the numbers I could finish it. It was pretty much like Dr. McKenna said. I talked with other people. The thoughts that I came up with are if there was cancer in the lymph nodes, then there could be cancer in other lymph nodes that the radiation doesn't get because it is localized. So, I am probably in better shape now than I would be in 10 years if the cancer comes back. The conclusion is that after the radiation, I will be having chemo and hormone therapy. This was confirmed when I went to my family doctor. She said that if it were her, that is what she would do.

The nurse who worked with her for years passed away a few months ago. They discovered adrenal gland cancer in her and she died within a month before they could even get her therapy going good. It is very aggressive. I was so sorry to hear that, she was such a sweet lady. The new nurse is also very nice. Kristina says she is fortunate to be able to have such nice nurses working with her.

Since I am going to do radiation, I made an appointment with Jan at Hairrington Place and had my hair cut. We didn't set one up for next month. Chemo in 7 weeks, so I will be waiting to set up an appointment when I see what is going on. After the haircut, we went to COSTCO and picked up a few things, then Ray had a hot dog and I had a slice of pizza. Mother calledwhen I got home and I explained everything to her. Bless her heart, she was so tired and so was I so we didn't talk much but both decided it was bed time. (Mother in the picture with her Buddy!)

I woke with a headache this morning at 5am. I am somewhat better now that I have had a cup of coffee and some oatmeal. I don't like to take pain medication if I can help it. I got on Twitter last night and signed up, but I really can't see the benefit of it. I may not stay on there. I cannot imagine sitting around watching people minute by minute. I am a little tech-manic but not that much. I like facebook though and I love getting little flowers and eggs. An egg my sister Linda sent turns out to be and big bluebird!

We are going to NC today after my radiation. Can't wait to see everyone!

UNDECIDED PINK!

Good Morning, I think!

I was just checking Facebook and thought I would share my link: http://profile.to/barbaraduke/
I got 3 new friends yesterday. Cresenti Williams and Joan Ward were people that really counted. The other person is a friend of a friend of a relative.

I was looking on the Internet at fig trees and remembered that Joan had one or two. I called and we had a wonderful conversation. She is so knowledgeable. She has been taking classes at CNU and Thomas Nelson. There is a special program for people over 60 to audit classes. She is in love with languages. She used to teach Spanish, I think. She is now into French, Italian, and is learning German at the present time. She loves to travel and likes to learn the language before she goes. That is her passion, but you should see her garden. It is something else. She took lots of horticultural classes also.

Cresenti is in our choir. She is a very special, lovely friend. She has exhibited so much faith in me. She joined National Companies and XanGo when I asked her. She is so sweet and kind. She was at church last night. She recently moved to Virginia Beach and I don't get to see her as much as I would like to.

About yesterday's visit to the doctor, I start radiation on Friday. The results from the Oncotype testing were kind of on the border. I need to research it further. Starting the radiation will give me a six week breather to decide whether to do the chemo or not. There is an 18% chance of getting cancer again in the next 10 years, which means that there is a 82% chance that I won't. But, if I get cancer again in 10 years, will I be as able to fight it off with chemo at 70 as I am now at 60? People normally only have a 5% chance of getting cancer and it goes up as you age. It is something I am going to have to pray about. If you can give me some guidance, please do.
Email me at barbara.p.duke@gmail.com if you don't have my regular email address. Dr. M gave me the papers from the results and now I can go on a medical website that I have been working with and put in the numbers. I will let you know how it comes out.

Dinner last night at church was meatloaf. It really was good. There were salad, mashed potatoes and green peas, rolls, and a choice of coconut or white cake with chocolate icing. Our regular cook was ill but he sent a very able substitute.

Got to go now. I need to move around some so my leg won't hurt so bad. I am seeing the doctor this afternoon to get it checked out again. Beverly is coming over and we are going to work on the church website this morning and I have to get dressed. Have a great day!

CHEMO PINK?

This is the day I find out about the chemo. My stomach is in knots. The appointment is at 9:30 am and Ray is taking me. I decided that if Dr. M tells me that I don't have to have chemo, I will call Harrington Place and make an appointment for Jan to cut my hair. If he says that I have to do chemo, I might as well keep it because it will probably fall out in a couple of weeks and then I will don the wig and be the new Lucy! I might have to find a blonder one. No one would recognize me with dark hair. Besides, red hair might look strange with no eyebrows or eyelashes. Dr. M. said I had such a nice smile I could get one of those multi-colored clown wigs. I know I have a postive attitude, but I am not sure I am that positive.

Although, in the 1960s I did have a couple of those wig hats that were made of fake fur. They were fun. I wonder what happened to them? My mother probably threw them out or sold them at a yard sale 40 years ago! LOL! I do have a pink hat, about 6 red hats, 3 black hats, 2 white hats, a Panama Hat, and a gardening hat (I wear this one). I love hats, but every time I put one on, I end up discarding it before I leave the house, or I leave it in the car.

By the way, the Region Meeting was fun. I won a large jewel encrusted brass female lion (from Las Vegas, I hear), and Ray won a Tea Pot with Tea, and gift bag with some cute bunnies for the yard or fireplace. I may make a pic of our stash and put it on the blog. If someone has an idea of what to do with the Lion, I would appreciate it. Maybe EBay? Oh, and Ray won a Lions cup with a bulb from Becky's bulbs. I gave it to Linda because she was such a super friend yesterday.

I have to go get my coat now and get ready to go. Wish me luck if you want, but a little prayer would do more good!

RADIOLOGY PINK

I got my first 2 tatoos this morning. One in the center of my chest and one on the right side. Actually, they gave me little dot tatoos at the Riverside Cancer Center Radiology Department.

I had to put my hands over my head and hold a bar for 15 minutes while I was in a CAT SCAN machine. Oh, the pain. I cannot imagine how much it would have hurt if they had done a complete mastectomy or taken out more lymph nodes. It was painful for me. They didn't know about the Oncotype text either, so I guess I still have to wait until Wednesday to find out. If I don't have to do Chemo, I return to the Radiology Dept and start radiation on Friday. If I do have to do Chemo, I will probably start soon and radiation will have to wait. The nurse this morning told me the they don't normally do chemo and radiation at the same time for breast cancer patients.

Linda Gregory called about carpooling to Matthews for the Lions Region Meeting. There will be 6 of us so we are meeting at Ft Eustis Blvd to carpool. This meeting has a dinner attached. Fried Oysters, Fried Chicken, Virginia Ham, green beans, Shrimp Pasta Salad, hushpuppies, bread, tea and dessert. We go every year and I have seen some people eat an enormous amount of oysters. I don't like them, so Ray eats mine. It is a yearly money maker by the Matthews Lions Club.

While I was on the phone with Linda, I kind of broke down and cryed again. What is the matter with me? Linda said that it is natural, that the stress gets really bad sometimes when cancer is involved. She was so sweet and asked me to call her whenever I needed to talk. I may take her up on it.

Then, Anne Glover called to see how I was doing. She had an email this morning from the real estate company where she works and it said that Susan Fortunato was back at work. Susan has stage 4 cancer. Last year she dropped out of everything and no one could get hold of her. Someone told me she was going to rest and get well. I hope and pray that she did. It will be good to see her at the Women's Club and Peninsula Women's Network again.

I read Joy Kilgore's blog yesterday. She is so funny. I never knew she was into so many things. She is a smart business woman and pretty too. You too can read her blog "Knowing I'm Alive" at http://rememberitnow.blogspot.com/. She is the complete package. Her husband is certainly a blessed man and she is a blessed woman to have a husband like Tag. They are an incredible couple. I am one of those people in our church that would enjoy having Tag as pastor on a permanent basis.

I didn't sleep over 3 hours last night. The pain in my leg is not good. I am going to see if I can get a doctor appointment with my regular doctor. I will be going with Ray to his voice lesson so we can meet up with Jim & Linda, and Earl & Judyto go to Matthews.

MARDI GRAS PINK - The Forgotten Party

Peggy Pierce, President of WCNN, is pictured with her husband.

I don't know why I missed this but we DJ'ed the Women's Club of Newport News Mardi Gras Dance on February 28. We had a wonderful time. They had a wonderful dinner of salad, chicken and sausage gumbo, and cornbread. The dinner was wonderful and their was lots of fun by all. The proceeds this year will be going to the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank. They are always in need, but unfortunately a little more than usual this year.

The Women's Club was decorated beautifully. Lots of beads and bangles (me too!). We had a silent auction and I think it did pretty well also.

Ray did his usual excellent job as MC, DJ, and wonderful singer of great songs.

If anyone knows of someone who needs a wonderful DJ, let us know. We could use the extra cash. LOL!

Lady and her husband from the Foodbank on the right.

They had cakes that were donated and we had a cake walk
and so much fun. Ray surprised us by being an auctioneer of one.

Oh! The hidden talents of that wonderful man.

There were so many people who worked so hard on this event. I couldn't possibly remember them all. Linda Rayfield baked the cornbread and helped with the cakewalk.

As soon as I get the names of the others responsible, I will add them. The four young ladies in the center picture below are our servers for the evening, recruited from Warwick High School. Looks like future members to me.
The young lady on the right was our wine server. Her name is Heather and she is a granddaughter of one of our members.

DISAPPOINTED PINK

If you have been reading the blog, you know I have been patiently waiting (not really) for my appointment with Dr McKenna this morning. Well, I was almost ready to go, the phone rang, it was his nurse calling to reschedule because he was out sick today. We rescheduled for Wednesday morning and now I have to see Dr Layzer (radiologist) tomorrow morning. Maybe he can call Dr McK.and get the results from the Oncotype testing. The nurse said they could do both at the same time, but that is not what Dr. McK said. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

This was another saga in the emotional roller-coaster of breast cancer. I burst into tears after I hung up the phone. I couldn't help it. I had been waiting 2 weeks and had people praying at 9:45 a.m. this morning. Ray told me not to get upset. He reminded me that I am not in this alone. Besides him, there is the Lord who will carry us through. That helped. Lord, help me to focus on you and not on me. I feel a little numb at this point.

I decided to do some laundry and get the house straightened up some. Anything to keep my mind busy. Didn't work well. so I got back on the computer and looked at the Google reader and put some things on the blog. I hope you enjoyed them.

I am learning more about Google. It is really interesting. I am on Facebook and thought about Twitter, but I read a blog this morning that says the Facebook has more people join in one day than Twitter has members and it would take Twitter 34 years to catch up. You think? Besides, I am not sure I need to belong to another social network. I signed up for MySpace but it seems to me more young children or teenagers. So I will probably delete that one. I am on GoXone with XanGo, but that one is not going so well. No one seems to be signing up.

There is a Saturday training with Marlene Balingit from Las Vegas in Hampton. It will be at the Spring Suites, 1999 Power Plant Parkway.
10:00 a.m. XanGo Overview
11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Business Building

Marlene Balingit and her husband Nick use to own a life insurance company and they liked it, but they were looking for a way to make an escalating residual income so they could one day move back to the Philippines. Marlene has a background in teaching so she was a perfect fit for XanGo. Carole Escolano 500K Premier shared XanGo with her, but it took six months of prodding her in the right direction to get her to finally see it. The rest is history. She was Premier in five months. She was 200K in eight more months! If you can go, you don't want to miss her fantastic story.

Teachers open the doors, but you must enter by yourself. - Chinese proverb

XanGo International Juice LLC is a good company. I am still drinking the juice every day. I think it is helping. Who knows, the cancer could have been worse. The new non-toxic Glimpse skin care is also very good. Someone asked me at church last week if I had a facelift. Trust me. I have not. I have been trying so hard to take better care of myself and this happens. The good news is I found it early.

God isn't finished with me yet! There is so much more that I need to learn and I agree with Donna Clingingpeel, there is something to be learned from this experience. Got to go get dinner fixed. Nothing fancy, just turkey and mashed potatoes. (Leftovers from Sunday)

GARDENING PINK

I listened to this essay about the importance of physical labor by urban gardener Mary Seton Corboy on the This I Believe program and thought it was so brilliant I had to share. Listening to her talk about digging ditches made me want to run outside and dig something…

Original audio source It will download to your computer, so control where you put it so you can hear it. It is awesome. I am planting veggies too this years' crop. Gave me hope for today.

CANCER SITE PINK

A favour to ask, it only takes a minute....

Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on 'donating a mammogram' for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. Or pass this website to those you know

SATURDAY WORKER PINK

This little cutie on the right is my new grand-nephew, Owen. Isn't he precious?I just want to drive to Kentucky and hug him. I don't know when I will be able to go now. He has an older brother named Wyatt. I know that Mommie & Daddy are proud of both of them and I bet my brother Sonny and his wife Pat are too.

I finally found someone to clean the yard. Juan Garcia, our Hispanic Minister at church sent 2 Hispanic men and they cleaned the front last week and the back today. It sure looks better. There is some things that still need to be done, but I think I can handle it as soon as it warms up some.

I ended up staying at home today because they were here. Ray had a meeting of the Alpha Unit of Parliamentarians in Richmond. Looks like he will be the new president next year (starting in July). He is also going to be the President of the Peninsula Unit next year. Busy guy. I hope he hasn't bit off more than he can chew.

I read Mary Beth Gibson's Blog at http://mbupdate.blogspot.com/ until very late last night. I ended up nodding off and woke up, turning off the laptop, going to bed at about 1:30 a.m. When I got up this morning, I read the rest of it. I learned so much. She goes into much more detail about what went on with her. She sure has done a lot more research than I have.

Rhonda shared with me that her Mother-in-Law's cancer has started accelerating. It may have gone to her brain. She only weighs about 76 lbs. I don't think she ever weighed over 110 lbs. in her life. She is a tiny woman. I home you can add Debbie to your prayers.

I found a granddaughter and great-granddaughter on Facebook. Jennifer just got married but she hasn't shared her new last name with us yet. I will put a picture of the happy couple on the blog when she shares his name with us. Emily is the great. Isn't she pretty. She has a good disposition. They live in North Carolina, somewhere near Swansboro. We are so happy that Jen has met someone. She has been working so hard to take care of her daughter. Her mother, Deborah, lives nearby and Emily loves her grandma a lot.

I think I have the laundry caught up. That is a big to-do. I am a little nervous about my appointment with Dr McKenna on Monday morning. He should have the results of my Oncotype testing and I will find out about the Chemotherapy. After reading Mary Beth's blog, I am more certain that I don't want to do it. If not, I start radiation on Tuesday. This has been a strange time. I am doing so many other things trying to keep my mind still lately. Creating Church websites, blogging, writing a book, working with the Lions, Women’s Club, etc. Just anything to keep from thinking about it. I am kind of depressed and cannot settle on one thing for very long.

Depression can really pull you down. I am trying to keep a cheerful outlook, so if you see me, give me a big smile so that I will remember to smile. We are watching Charles Stanley and he is talking about control. Sometimes, we just don't want anyone to control us, not even God, but we are better off trusting Him and putting it in His hands. GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME!!

Ray told me I should buy the new Kindle 2 and give him my old one. I reminded him that the "old" one is only about 7 months old. The nice thing about the new one though is that it has a reader that will read to you through the earphone if you want. Isn't that great? Well, maybe, maybe not. Have you every been able to stay awake listening to an electronic reader. Lord, do not turn one on an try to drive. It will put you to sleep.

Rhonda hasn't been feeling well, so she needs to be prayed for too. Prayer Warriors unite!

I think I am going to bed. Spring forward tonight!!! Love to all, Barbara

BEYOND BOOBS, INC.! PINK

I went to the Woman's Club Board Meeting this morning. Everyone there was so nice. I am the Parliamentarian and barely had anything to do. Everybody is so busy. I wish I was so into it as they are. I had planned to be, but I am just not up to it yet. Linda Rayfield thanked Ray and I for DJing the Mardi Gras last Saturday. There was a luncheon afterwards for new members and the board. I ate a little but had to leave. I felt so tired and my hips were hurting so. I got home and rested.

When the mail came today, there was a lovely note from Beyond Boobs! –Ms. Mary Beth Gibson (click on title above to link to them). There was a beautiful calendar. There were pictures of beautiful ladies that are going through this or have gone through this. The calendar that has all sorts of information about Breast Cancer and how women are dealing with it. Someone in my Peninsula Women's Network told them. That was so sweet. I learned a lot and I think maybe I haven't been reading enough and will have to read a little more. It also gives lots of resources to get help. I think the most comforting thing about this is all the people who say they are praying for me. I really feel so blessed.

I heard from my mother this afternoon. She spent the day at the UK School of Medicine yesterday. The opthomologist took some extra time to explain to her what is wrong with her eye. I am so glad. They are going to repair the damage from the original cataract surgery. It is just a pity that she had to go through a year of this stress of not being able to see clearly. Please say a prayer for her also. Her surgery will be on March 31.

I am going to add a link to the title of each day from now on to a cancer site if you would like to follow.

This is the day the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it!!!!

Pastor Doug Davis - Leland Prayer Warrior

When I found out about your current situation, I thought of Romans 8:37-39 (NIV) 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else (not even "c") in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Barbara, you are truly more than a conqueror because there is nothing that can separate you from the love of God. I feel God will use you as a witness and blessing to others through this experience.May you feel the warmth of God's loving arms around you each day. I pray for you when you; feel tired / His strength!, sad / His Joy!, discouraged / His Comfort!, frustration / His Peace!, afraid / His Love! (His love casts out all fear)!

Week of February 6 -When You Speak, God Hears by Max Lucado - "Those who pray keep alive the watch fires of faith. For the most part we don't even know their names. Such is the case of someone who prayed on a day long ago. His name is not important. He is important not because of who he was, but because of what he did. He went to Jesus on behalf of a friend. His friend was sick, and Jesus could help, and someone needed to go to Jesus, so someone went. Others cared for the sick man in other ways. Some brought food; others provided treatment; still others comforted the family. Each role was crucial. Each person was helpful, but no one was more vital than the one who went to Jesus.

John writes: "So Mary and Martha sent someone to tell Jesus, 'Lord, the one you love is sick'" (John 11:3, emphasis mine). Someone carried the request. Someone walked the trail. Someone went to Jesus on behalf of Lazarus. And because someone went, Jesus responded. In the economy of heaven, the prayers of saints are a valued commodity. John the apostle would agree. He wrote the story of Lazarus and was careful to show the sequence: The healing began when the request was made. The phrase the friend of Lazarus used is worth noting. When he told Jesus of the illness, he said, "The one you love is sick." The power of the prayer, in other words, does not depend on the one who makes the prayer but on the one who hears the prayer. We can and must repeat the phrase in manifold ways. "The one you love is tired, sad, hungry, lonely, fearful, depressed."

The words of the prayer vary, but the response never changes. The Savior hears the prayer. He silences heaven so he won't miss a word. The Master heard the request. Jesus stopped whatever he was doing and took note of the man's words. This anonymous courier was heard by God. John's message is critical. You can talk to God because God listens. Your voice matters in heaven. He takes you very seriously. When you enter his presence, the attendants turn to you to hear your voice. No need to fear that you will be ignored. Even if you stammer or stumble, even if what you have to say impresses no one, it impresses God--and he listens. Intently. Carefully.

The prayers are honored as precious jewels. Purified and empowered, the words rise in a delightful fragrance to our Lord. "The smoke from the incense went up from the angel's hand to God" (Rev. 8:4). Incredible. Your words do not stop until they reach the very throne of God. One call and heaven's fleet appears. Your prayer on earth activates God's power in heaven. You are the someone of God's kingdom. Your prayers move God to change the world. You may not understand the mystery of prayer. You don't need to. But this much is clear: Actions in heaven begin when someone prays on earth. What an amazing thought! When you speak, Jesus hears. And when Jesus hears, the world is changed. All because someone prayed.

"THE REQUEST HAS BEEN MADE, Doug

WONDER PINK

The snow is almost gone. I am so happy! It is supposed to be 7o degrees tomorrow. Yesterday wasn't so bad and today was better. Tomorrow is really looking up.

I went to church yesterday for dinner. I was able to pick up Dot and Kitty at the Chesapeake to take them. Beverly Parker and I worked on the website in the parlor until Peggy had to leave and go home because her father-in-law fell. That was okay. We got a lot done and I was able to show her somethings about changing things on the website. It is looking really good and I will put a link on the blog when it is finished. Everyone at church was so supportive and loving. I feel so fortunate to be a member there. We are a real family. It really is amazing how much everyone agrees on most things. I don't think I have ever belonged to any church or organization that was so cohesive. There are some really sweet people there.

For where your treasure is. there your heart will be also. Matthew 6.21

MONDAY/TUESDAY PINK

Monday. What a day! I made an awful mistake. My computer asked to install Internet Explorer 8 and I said "Yes." It was a big no-no! It is different and I lost my tabs that I had set up with IE 7. I can't click on links in Outlook email anymore because it did something to it and I haven't figured out how to fix it yet. It dumped my personal passwords and it is a good thing that I have all of them recorded in a book, or I wouldn't be able to get into anything without having so many places sending my password. There is always something. Now I have to set up everything all over again. I wished I had some kind of password card I could put in the computer that would allow me to use the same password encryption for everything like I did when I worked for Uncle Sam.

It snowed most all day. It is so pretty, but mess comes on Tuesday or Wednesday when it starts to melt. Our Lions Club meeting was small but our Zone Chairman came by and made it fun. I had the shrimp basket and instead of french fries, I got a side of grits. That was wonderful. I am so glad they are willing to substitute. I really need the iron in the grits, and not the fat in the fries. We meet at Angelo's on J. Clyde Morris Blvd. The food is reasonable, not great, but tasty enough.
Trees in backyard

Ray and I were going to FDR (Food Done Right) in Jefferson Commons on Sunday and were shocked to see that they were closed. It looks like they closed for good. We ended up going to Cheddar's. Ray had the Hot Chicken Tenders and I had the New Orleans Pasta with Sausage, Grilled Chicken, and Shrimp.

If you are wondering why my paragraphs are not lining up right. Something happened and all of a sudden nothing is straight. I think I am going to have to read my HTML for Dummies book to figure out what code to put in to make things work right. Anyway, if you see some odd thing, it is because I am trying to make a difference between the paragraphs.

Today is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.

PRAISING GOD PINK

Sunday. It was a wonderful Sunday Morning! It was raining and cold, but Ray sang a solo in church for both services. "Silent Strength" was the song he sang. He had a wonderful introduction and the song was beautiful, not to mention his renditions was awesome. I know we all enjoyed it because everyone was telling me so, and I am sure that God knew what a worship experience it was for Ray and for each one of us. Ray has such a God-given Gift.

We were so blessed this morning. We had enough ushers for both services. We don't always, but today was wonderful. Everyone came through. I wasn't feeling so well and I could have stayed home, but then I would have missed Ray's song. I just can't do that. I appreciate all the ushers on my team so much, they are there and help with the service every week. I know God loves them (And, so do I!). I was able to rest my leg in the Bride's room this morning. Thank you, Lord!

I had a talk with a young girl this morning during bible study time in the grooms room by the Sanctuary. I was feeling bad and she came in. (I think she might have been trying to avoid Sunday school.) We had a long talk and she has some real issues in her life. I think I was able to give her options and she has my card now if she ever needs to talk or needs anything else that I can help with. I know her mother and I am going to call her and see what I can do. I told the girl that I would talk with her mother, so I am not breaking her confidence. I think the Lord opened a door for me to help make a difference in her life. I am going to pray about it.

I know that some people will think this strange, but God has been talking to me again. He wants our church to pay off the debt on His education building. I told Rob Brown and June Ray this morning. He spoke to me about 6 years ago about giving the old church to Zoe Community Church and October 28, 2007, we gave the old church building to Zoe Community Church. I have been hearing His voice again. (I know the old adage that when you talk to God it is called prayer; when God talks to you it is called schizophrenia.) It is time to rally the troops and retire the debt. It may be He wants us to be debt free for our new pastor. That would be great!

I am sure that we can do this. "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me" is the appropriate prayer. We can do all things! Christ has blessed our church so much, and the blessing is going to come again.

It is snowing outside.

Devotion and Prayer time. Gospel of Mark.
