Pain in Pink

I know everyone is wondering what happened to me, since I haven't been on Twitter and Facebook much lately. I am having a Rheumatoid Arthritis "Flare-up".

My feet are swollen and hurt badly. My arms and hands are the worst parts, although my neck comes in a close second. It is difficult to type and use the mouse.

Wikipedia explains Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs, but principally attacks flexible (synovial) joints. It can be a disabling and painful condition, which can lead to substantial loss of functioning and mobility if not adequately treated.
The process involves an inflammatory response of the capsule around the joints (synovium) secondary to swelling (hyperplasia) of synovial cells, excess synovial fluid, and the development of fibrous tissue (pannus) in the synovium. The pathology of the disease process often leads to the destruction of articular cartilage and ankylosis (fusion) of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also produce diffuse inflammation in the lungs, membrane around the heart (pericardium), the membranes of the lung (pleura), and white of the eye (sclera), and also nodular lesions, most common insubcutaneous tissue. Although the cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, autoimmunity plays a pivotal role in both its chronicity and progression, and RA is considered a systemic autoimmune disease. It is a clinical diagnosis made on the basis of symptoms, physical exam, radiographs (X-rays) and labs.[1]"

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a auto-immune disease. Although Arthritis is mentioned, it is not a real factor, unless you also have Osteoarthritis, as I do. You can look up on Wikipedia; it goes into much more detail. So, don't ever dismiss someone when they tell you they have RA, with the phrase "Oh, yeah! I have trouble with arthritis in my knees." RA is so much worse than arthritis. It can be extremely painful. It was discovered in 2009 after I had pneumonia in North Carolina. I was in the hospital in New Bern for 10 days in August. Everyone you can imagine was trying to find out what was wrong. I had every x-ray you could possibly think of. All they could come up with was pneumonia. They had me on morphine because the pain was so bad and oxygen because if I hurt, I would forget to breathe.

There was a group of traveling doctors that spent their time going to different hospitals and working for a month or so, then moving on to another hospital. They were some of the best in their fields in NC. I saw heart, internal medicine, infectious disease doctors, and a neurologist. I didn't feel like I had pneumonia, but that was probably due to the generous doses of morphine.

My daughter, Rhonda would spend the night with me. She was a teacher-assistant and they were on Summer break. I slept a lot. After they determined I wasn't dying, my mother left to go home to Kentucky. When I finally got out of the hospital, Ray took me to our little house in NC for the night. Then we got up the next morning and came back to Virginia. I was so glad to drive over that State line. That was on Sunday. On Monday, I went to get my blood checked at the Cancer Center. Dr. Schlesinger had been the intermediary with the hospital in NC and with Riverside Regional. She wanted to see me and insisted I have another chest x-ray. Well, guess what, I still had pneumonia and I was put in Riverside for the next 9 days. The doctor had her nurse go back through my records and see if there was anything that might be causing this. He went through everything and then he was going through test results and he came to the BRACA test for breast cancer. I didn't test positive for breast cancer, but evidently I had two markers for Rheumatoid Arthritis. They had found the cause of a lot of my pain.

When I was over the pneumonia and sent home, they sent me to Dr. Wilson, one of the few RA doctors in this area. He put me on Enbrel, which is a biologic and comes in a shot. I give myself a shot every week in my belly. Oh, don't worry, I have had a tummy tuck and have no nerves that work there. Doesn't hurt at all. I also take methotrexate and prednisone. I have pain pills that I try not to use, but sometimes when I start to hurt, it is better to take something and head the pain off at the pass. I cannot take over-the-counter medicine for pain because it might take so many that it could cause liver failure.

So, right now, I am going through a flareup in my RA. This too shall pass. I am on a few prayer lists. I know it is driving Ray crazy because I cannot drive. I simply cannot take pain medication and drive. The few places I have gone lately, he has taken me.

I contacted the doctor on Wednesday and he put me on a prednisone pack, and I am better already. The only thing about the prednisone is that it helps add weight to my thighs.

So, if you have a friend or relative that has RA, don't feel sorry for them, but ask if there is anything you can do to help. A dear friend brought a quiche for our dinner for Valentines Day! I still was not feeling well enough to go out.

Mitzee PINK

The groundhog saw his shadow and that is supposed to mean that Spring is on it's way. That is a wonderful idea to me.

My little puppy, Mitzi came to live with us the first week in January. She is a ShitzuPoo and is incredibly cute. Even though she kept me awake a lot last night, she occasionally uses the puppy paper, and loves to bite on my hands, she (Mitzee) has captured our hearts. She is not quite 5 months old.

We also have a Maltepoo, Snowball. We got him last June. He is about 5 years old and a little set in his ways. Mitzee chases him around while he growls. It has taken a month, but he is becoming tolerant of her.

This morning she actually did both of her businesses on the paper. I am so proud. She didn't wake me up once last night.

Ray is so good with them both. He is as patient with them as he is with me. He never has a bad word for anyone.

Mayo Clinic - Cardiac Care Pink

My sister Jan's dear friend Anne passed away. They believe she had a heart attack. She was getting ready for work and called her husband's name and by the time he got there, she was gone.

Jan sent me this. She had known Anne for over 20 years and I know she is hurting. When a friend dies, we face our own mortality. Jan is concerned that so many people are her age. We are Boomers and we need this information.

Good things to know!  Mayo Clinic
How many folks do you know who say they don't want to drink anything before going to bed because they'll have to get up during the night!!
I  never knew all of this! Interesting.......
I asked my Doctor why people need to urinate so much at night time.  Answer from my Cardiac Doctor: “Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell). When you lie down and the lower body seeks level with the kidneys, it is then that the kidneys can remove the water because it is easier.”

I knew you need a minimum of water to help flush the toxins out of your body, but this was news to me.
Correct time to drink water... Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist!
Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its  effectiveness on the body:
  • 2 glasses of water after waking up -  helps activate internal organs
  • 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
  • 1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps  lower blood pressure
  • 1 glass of water before going to bed -  avoids stroke or heart attack

My Physician also told me that water at bedtime will help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.

Mayo Clinic on Aspirin
Dr. VirendSomers, a Cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic, is lead author of the report in the July 29,  2008 issue of the Journal of the American College of  Cardiology.
Most heart attacks occur in the day, generally between 6 a.m. and noon. Having one during the night, when the heart should be most at rest, means that something unusual happened. Somers and his colleagues have been working for a decade to show that sleep apnea is to blame.

  • If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day, take it at night. The reason: Aspirin has a 24-hour "half-life"; therefore, if most heart attacks happen in the wee hours of the morning, the Aspirin would be strongest in your system.
  • Aspirin lasts a really long time in your medicine chest - for years, (when it gets old, it smells like vinegar).
  • Bayer is making crystal aspirin to dissolve instantly on the tongue. It works much faster than the tablets.

Why keep aspirin by your bedside? The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heart attack during their sleep did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep. If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water. Then call 911.

Phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by.  Say "heart attack!"  Say that you have taken 2 Aspirins. Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and  ...DO NOT LIE DOWN!

There are other symptoms of a heart attack besides pain in the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating;  however, these symptoms may also occur less frequently.

Note: It is possible that there may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack.
A Cardiologist has stated that if each person after  receiving this information and lets more people know where to get the information, probably one life could be saved!
I have already shared this information. What about you? It may save lives!
 "Life is a one-time gift."

Positive PINK with HireInfluence

I am feeling so positive. I have renewed my work with @HireInfluence. I will be doing something a little different. I will be tweeting out a link to their homepage  a few times a day, and then when someone clicks on it and goes there, it will be credited to me. It is kind of an affiliate kind of thing. I am looking forward to this. This is for Networking Social Media Superstars. You can fill out the form and join. Your name will be added to a list of people who are qualified for a variety of Social Media Jobs that will be coming available in the near future. There are a lot of companies, large and small that will be needing someone to run their social media, which I think will end up being one of the best forms of advertising that a company can use. There can be more interaction with clients through social media. @HireInfluence will provide the HR for companies they are lining up who can use their services. The thing that is most important to me is that there are those of you out there who need work and you have the expertise that is needed. This could be the opportunity of a lifetime. You could go to work for a company or maybe even work as a consultant. I feel so good about this. It is a win-win for me. I will be able to make a little extra money and my friends may be able to find good paying jobs doing what they love to do. Not to mention I can have my cleaning lady come back. She needs extra cash too. WATCH FOR MY TWEETS!

Everything is coming up Roses for me (and for you). The past four years have whished (made-up word) by. I have prayed to feel better and that has not happened, but I don't think I feel any worse. That is GOOD! LIFE IS GOOD! GOD IS GOOD!

I have all my wonderful friends on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Empire Avenue, etc. I have an amazing reach. You can check out my page on HireInfluence at Barbara Duke. I have been blessed.

Recently, I spoke with someone at All Radio Network (ARN). I signed up for it, but on deeper consultation with Ray and my doctor, it was decided that it would not be a good fit for me at the present time. If they had sent me more information to begin with, I might have been able to talk them into it. They actually signed me up when I was on a lot of Vicadin and I wasn't really sure what I was doing. I know I am a little ADHD and tend to go overboard sometimes, so for now, I will let them guide me in that area. It sounded like a great program with lots of potential, but I just do not think that it would work for me right now. I need to be quiet and do my thing and rest when possible. I really don't need anything extra. At least, that is what they tell me. They keep charging my credit card and I have asked to cancel, but have not heard anything. I think they should return the payments they asked for and heaven help them if they set up a site and use my name without my permission.

We went to Kentucky and I was able to see my mother. She seemed alright most of the time. She just forgets a lot. Since I seem to do that too, it didn't appear to be such a big deal to me, although I do worry about her. She has some wonderful neighbors who will be able to discern if she is not doing well. My brother goes over to her house often to check on her, and she spends some time at his house.

My brother and his wife are going to take their Airstream and go to Marti Gras in New Orleans and the Super Bowl. Evidently, there is a group of wealthy people who love motor homes and travel to different venues. This one has been going to Marti Gras for over 45 years.
Then in April, they are going on a cruise with my sister Jan and her husband, Woody. They are going to Spain and spend an extra week in Barcelona after the cruise.

I am going to write something on my other blog today that some people may not like, but it is my opinion about some things that are going. I will tweet it out when I am done. I hope that you are having a great week. We are not quilting today because everyone is having problems with arthritis and the weather is awful. So, I get to stay home in my PJs, cook some comfort food and do a little organizing/cleaning, since this wasn't the week for my cleaning lady.

YEARS ENDING PINK?

Flowers sent to me by
Kathy Ireland
when I was so sick
with pneumonia.
ENDING PINK? On January 2, it will be 4 years since I found the lump on my right breast. On January 28, it will be 4 years since I had surgery to remove part of my right breast and some lymph nodes. It has been a rocky 4 years, after the life-sucking tiredness of radiation and the nauseating chemo-therapy, there still is the overwhelming feeling that the cancer is coming back. I know this is not a good way to think, but sometimes you just cannot control your thoughts.

Kathy Ireland - Super Friend!
I try so hard to be positive and be the Professional Encourager that I say that I am, fights this feeling every day. Something about the word "Cancer" just changes your life in ways that people that have not been through it can not understand. For me, it was like hitting a brick wall at full speed. I was fortunate that the cancer was only very minuscule in the lymph nodes. The treatment was supposed to take care of that and I am still on the 5 year regimen of pills that is supposed to keep it from coming back.

Then, after the chemo, my mother came to visit. You know that when your mother comes to visit, especially if you haven't seen her in a while, you hire people to clean the house and the yard. The house looked great, but unfortunately, the yard guys stripped out all my beautiful Clematis vines and my Grecian urn garden (actually dragged the stones and pots into the street). Mother and I were both prolific gardeners and it made us both sick. The second day she was here, we drove to our "beach house" in NC. On the way down, I started having terrible pain in my right side. I thought it was just "air." Not so, by the time we reached the house, I was in so much pain, I could barely walk. My daughter called 911 and the Rescue Squad was there in less than 4 minutes.

They took me to the beautiful hospital in New Bern. They took many tests and determined it was pneumonia. Ten days there in the hospital went so quickly because Ray brought my computer and doped up on morphine as I was, I really got into Twitter. I became fast friends with people all over the world who ended up praying for me to get better.

Finally, I got to go home to VA. Then I checked in with my doctor here, and ended up back in Riverside Regional Medical Center with pneumonia again. Ten more days with my Twitter friends. During that time, our new pastor at First Baptist Church of Newport News VA, came to visit. He is a very kind and caring person, Pastor Dale Seley. He later told me that they were not sure I was going to make it. They had people come in and sit with me from church because I was in a private room and Ray had to work. The lovely ladies from church were wonderful.

The morphine must have been keeping me upbeat, because I don't remember feeling that I wouldn't make it. The one thing that I clung to the whole time was my love of God and knowing that no matter what happened to me personally, I would be in a good place with Him. I guess he wasn't finished with me yet, so here I am.

Looking back over the past four years, there have been many times when I have been depressed. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis from the markers on the BRACA  test for cancer. I have experienced a lot of pain, but I must always take another look at the day from a different prospective. I see so many people out there who are a lot more worse off than I am. A dear friend, Sandy Gueierre in Wilmington NC has been a great help to me. All I can tell you, is keep your faith in God; He will carry you through it all. He will be your best friend and the love of your life.

My husband, Ray, has be absolutely wonderful through all this. He is so patient with me and says "yes" to everything I want to do. He knows my heart and is truly the man that I prayed for so many years.

I have met so many people on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc. They all had a part in my life that kept me positive. Dabney Porte, my beautiful Social Media Girlfriend has been there for me the past couple of years. She always has a positive attitude, no matter who is trying to tear her down. She has been one of the rocks that I lean on. She has so much integrity, spirit, and love that I cannot imagine how anyone could ever be mean to her. Although, lately, there are a couple of sick people who are trying to destroy what she has, but they will not succeed. Any time you try to tear down others, you are the one who ends up on the bottom of the heap.

Thank you all for all the help, love, and friendship you have shown me over the past 4 years. I love you all more than you will ever know.

Pangeo PINK

The Twitter Social Media Slumberparty last night was great. Jeff Power from Pangeo Coffee was there. Jeff works with Pangeo Coffee through the auspices of Global Hope Network International. Dabney Porte thought it would be a good time for our slumberparty to travel to Africa and see for ourselves what is going on there. Pangeo is helping villages in several African Countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, etc.,.through the sale of coffee. Take a look at their website. Maybe you would want to share some of the wealth we have here in America and purchase coffee or donate.

It was an amazing party. Gifts were won by @funtoycourt Pangeo chocolates, @jewelfry won Pangeo Coffee.

I ordered some coffee and chocolate today.

Below, I have included three villages serviced by Pangeo. If you click on the name of the village, it will take you to the whole article and more pictures. It breaks my heart to see people living like this, but Pangeo is there helping all they can. I got coffee there before and it is so aromatic and tasty. You cannot lose. Take a look and get your "giving" face on and use Pangeo as a gift for your boss, friends, etc. It would be wonderful for them and also help these people in Kenya.

Dabney Porte is such a loving, kind, and sweet person of integrity, she just couldn't let the Holiday Season go by without trying to help others. We are so fortunate that we have her Social Media Girlfriends. I joined a few other women's groups, but I don't get the same feeling of family as I do with Dabs. She is one of the most positive people I know and if you have a chance, please look her up, if you haven't already. She is: @DabneyPorte on Twitter. the real DIVA of our world.

Quilting PINK

This is one of the most beautiful quilts that I have ever seen. I just had to showcase it today.  This quilt was featured in  Woman's Day Magazine. I am sure that it was made with great precision and love.
Stars of Grace
;

Joy Quilters is the group I belong to at First Baptist Church of Newport News VA are almost ready to take out quilts to the Children's Hospital for the Kings Daughters in Newport News for the children in chemo. I know from experience how cold it gets when you are having chemo. We have had another sewing machine promised to us. That will make three. It will be nice when we don't have to drag them to church every week.

We are so fortunate to live in this wonderful country, where we have the freedom to create beautiful things and are able to sell them if we want. We can give them to our children or to a museum if we wish. We do not have to work in sweat shops, but can work in the comfort of our homes. Our time is our own, most of the time anyway.
